In a game that looked to be overly mismatched, FAU came to Austin, Texas to play football. FAU and Texas faced eachother today in a game that, on paper, looked like an easy Texas win.
The Longhorns had their hands full. After kicking off, the Longhorns rugged defense closed the door on FAU's offense, causing a 3 and out. After the Flordia punt, Colt McCoy picked apart the defense in a drive that lasted 3 minutes and 25 seconds. Throwing to Peter Ullman, Colt McCoy caped the drive with a touchdown.
Soon after, FAU Quaterback Rusy Smith throws an interception right into the hands of awaiting Cornerback Deon Beasley. In a surprise move, Head Coach Mack Brown decided to split the rushing carries with an unlikely source.
"Chris is a great player," Coach Brown said of Chris Ogbonnaya, the 6-1, 225 Lb. fullback who stood up in the backfield as a tailback. "He is such a tough runner and never gives up. One play we would run off tackle and he would get dropped for a one yard gain, and than next play we would come back with an Iso Dive to the weakside, and he would churn out 9 yards."
It is undetermined if Ogbonnaya (#3) will soon start at Tailback. He was ranked as a 1st Team All American before the season began at the fullback position.
Chris Ogbonnaya said after the game; "I'm happy to contibute. If that means i'm blocking for Vondrell [McGee] than so be it, but if that means taking some hand offs and pounding out yards, i'll do that too."
Vondrell McGee, the supposed starting Tailback for the Longhorns, (#2) finished with 8 Rushes for 20 total yards, a sub-par 2.5 average. After the game, this reporter asked McGee if he was upset about the situation: "Nah, man. I ain't disappointed at all. I think Coach Brown is thinkin' of doin' a Thunder an' Lightening deal wit' us. Ya know, like the New York Giants did to with the Supa' Bowl. If you axed me, I would say this is a pretty good decision on the coaching part."
Whether this decision is final or not, we will have to wait and see. This is the last year that Chris Ogbonnaya will be eligible, because he is a senior, and if Vondrell McGee decides to enter the draft, that will leave the backfield pretty empty.
